Well, we did it again, folks! That's right; we won the Crescent Cup after a seven year drought.

Your ETMM Race Team went to Snowshoe/Silver Creek, WV the weekend of March 7th & 8th to compete for the Crescent Cup and we brought it home! The weather was beautiful...not too hot or too cold but just right for a winning weekend.

After Saturday's slalom races ETMM was in a four way tie for first place with teams from Asheville, Raleigh, and Greensboro, North Carolina, with nine other teams close behind. On Sunday the battle continued through both giant slalom races and we all knew it would be a tight finish.

At the awards ceremony several ETMM racers were called to receive individual trophies they had earned for being in the top three in their respective flights for the weekend. They were

Morgan Thacker         Flight 14          3rd place

Barbara Lang            Flight 13          2nd place

Alan Stevens             Flight 13          1st place

Mark Mabry               Flight 11          1st place

Mark Dison               Flight 5            3rd place

J.R. Thacker              Flight 4            3rd place

All the other ETMM racers present performed well, also, and posted good weekend results. They included Joy Thacker in flight 15, Lisa Beregi in flight 12, Rick Bates and Matt Cartier in flight 11, Savannah Stevens in flight 6, and Cody Stevens and Evan Thacker in flight 3. Beth Dison was in flight 22 for re-qualification.

However, we continued to hear awards in the names of racers from the other three teams that we had tied with on Saturday, and we knew that team totals were going to be close. The tension continued to mount after individual awards were completed and team announcements began.

In fourth place, with 71 points, Asheville. In third place, with 73 points, Raleigh. In second place, with 74 points, (here the announcer paused for what seemed to be a very long time, then announced) Greensboro. We were ecstatic, knowing at that moment that we had won the trophy. Then, the official announcement:  and in first place, with 75 points, East Tennessee!!! There were a total of 4 points separating fourth place from first place. It was indeed a very tight race all weekend and we felt fantastic knowing that we had defeated all those good teams to bring home the Crescent Cup Trophy for the first time since 2002. It will be ours for a year, and then we'll go after it again during next year's Crescent Cup Race weekend! (We do receive a permanent trophy that we keep).

Be sure to attend the April 7th club meeting to view all the trophies and to share our pride as we award this year's winners. We look forward to seeing you there!

Your ETMM race team wrapped up the regular season Crescent Ski Council/Subaru Race Series at the Beech Mountain race on Saturday, February 21st and Sunday, February 22nd.

The team began the season in December at Appalachian Mountain, placing fifth. We scratched our way into second place by the midway point in the season but fell back to fourth just two weeks ago at the Appalachian Mountain race on February 7th & 8th. One of our steadiest racers this season, Jo Widener, was injured during race practice a few days prior to the Appalachian race and was declared out for the season. We missed her solid skiing during our last two races and look forward to her return to the team next season.

On Saturday at Beech Mountain the team struggled with the slalom course, finishing eighth of nine teams. We held onto fourth place, statistically, but dropped back by nine points to Palmetto, the third place team. Sunday's Giant Slalom at Beech was held in blustery, cold, snowy conditions and most of the team's racers were surprisingly unaffected by the weather, turning in a solid third pace effort for the day. However, even though ETMM had a very good day and gained seven points on Palmetto on the final day of the regular season, we came up short and finished fourth overall.

There were some notable podium results at Beech, including:

    Saturday's Slalom                       Mark Mabry                Flight 8 - 1st place

Sunday's Giant Slalom                  Joy Thacker               Flight 15 - 2nd place

                                                            Andrew Naylor           Flight 13 - 2nd place

                                                            Savannah Stevens      Flight 7   - 2nd place

                                                            J R Thacker                Flight 5   - 3rd place

                                                            Parker Brown             Flight 5   - 1st place

                                                            Cody Stevens             Flight 4   - 3rd place

                                                            Evan Thacker             Flight 3   - 2nd place

Also, some noteworthy 4th place finishes were Barb Lang and Lisa Beregi on Saturday and on Sunday Alan Stevens also finished 4th, just off the podium.

The next news about racing will be after the team travels to Snowshoe/Silver Creek for the Crescent Cup Race weekend on March 6th, 7th, and 8th. Hopefully we will have good news to report after that, the final race weekend of the season.

*    SUBARU Vehicle Discounts

Part of the SUBARU racing sponsorship package this year is the renewal of the SUBARU VIP program for ALL Crescent Ski Council members.  This means that anyone who is a current member in good standing of ETMM or a Crescent Ski Council club can purchase a new Subaru at 2% below dealer cost minus any incentives that are currently being offered.  To qualify, you must have been a member of ETMM or other CSC Club for at least six (6) months.

If you are thinking of purchasing a new SUBARU contact me and I will get more information to you.  Subaru will mail the VIP information to you, which will include information about local dealers participating in the VIP program.

All you have to do is go to a local dealer, pick out the SUBARU that you want, and the dealer will pull the invoice and let you know if there are any additional current incentives that are deducted from the invoice price. THE VIP PROGRAM WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM OCTOBER 1, 2006 THROUGH OCTOBER 31, 2008.

Several Crescent members have taken advantage of this program and have gotten good deals on vehicles without the normal time consuming haggling.  Let me know if you have any interest.
